หลังหายไปจากจอเรดาร์ตั้งแต่เวลาราว 15.55 น. ของวันที่ 6 เม.ย. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น โดยเฮลิคอปเตอร์ลำดังกล่าวบินขึ้นจากฐานทัพใกล้เกาะมิยาโกะ จังหวัดโอกินาวา เพื่อปฏิบัติการลาดตระเวนพื้นที่ทางบก และมีกำหนดบินกลับฐานทัพในเวลา 17.05 น.
