Two people were reportedly wounded, a doctor is in his 40s and a patient in his 60s, reports say. The suspect fled via motorcycle to the neighbouring city of Warabi and has reportedly taken hostage insides a post office, the city said on its website. รายงานระบุด้วยว่าผู้ต้องสงสัยเป็นชายในช่วงอายุ 40-50 ปี หลบหนีด้วยจักรยานยนต์ไปยังเมืองวาราบิซึ่งอยู่ติดกับเมืองโทดะ
ขณะเดียวกันมีรายงานเหตุจับหญิง 2 คนเป็นตัวประกันที่สำนักงานไปรษณีย์เมืองวาราบิ โดยหนึ่งในนั้นเป็นพนักงานของไปรษณีย์ซึ่งต่อมาถูกปล่อยตัว แต่ยังไม่ยืนยันว่าทั้งสองเหตุการณ์เชื่อมโยงกันหรือไม่ รวมทั้งยังไม่ทราบแรงจูงใจ
ทั้งนี้ เหตุยิงในญี่ปุ่นเกิดขึ้นน้อยมาก เนื่องจากมีกฎหมายว่าด้วยการครอบครองปืนที่เข้มงวด และอนุญาตให้พลเรือนเป็นเจ้าของปืนไรเฟิลและปืนลมสำหรับล่าสัตว์เท่านั้น โดยผู้ครอบครองปืนจะต้องผ่านการตรวจสุขภาพจิตอย่างเข้มงวดเพื่อที่ซื้อปืนในญี่ปุ่น
