ศาลสั่งปรับเมตา – บีบีซี รายงานวันที่ 7 ส.ค. ว่า ศาลในรัฐนิวเม็กซิโก สหรัฐอเมริกา สั่งให้ “เมตา” (Meta) เจ้าของสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ยักษ์ใหญ่ บริษัทแม่เฟซบุ๊ก อินสตาแกรม และวอตส์แอปป์ จ่ายเงินอีก 567 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ (ราว 18,700 ล้านบาท)
สำหรับความล้มเหลวในการเตือนสาธารณชนเกี่ยวกับอันตรายที่แพลตฟอร์มของเมตามีต่อเด็กซึ่งเมตามีส่วนรับผิดชอบในการเปิดโอกาสให้เด็กและเยาวชนเข้าถึงเนื้อหาทางเพศ รวมถึงปล่อยให้เกิดการแสวงหาประโยชน์ทางเพศจากเด็กบนแพลตฟอร์ม และถือเป็นการตัดสินคดีครั้งใหญ่ที่สุดต่อบริษัทในด้านความปลอดภัยของเด็ก

ผู้พิพากษาไบรอัน บีดไชด์ กล่าวว่าเมตาเป็น “ภัยต่อสาธารณะ” เทียบได้กับมลพิษทางอากาศ และบริษัทต้องนำเงินจำนวนนี้ไปสมทบกองทุนที่มุ่งลดอันตรายในอนาคต ผู้พิพากษาบีดไชด์ยังเปรียบเทียบเมตากับโรงงาน มีสินค้าเป็นการโฆษณาและคอนเทนต์ “ความเสียหายทางจิตใจและการแสวงประโยชน์ทางเพศจากเด็กเป็นมลพิษที่ต้องกำจัดให้หมดไป”
ค่าปรับดังกล่าวเพิ่มเติมจาก 375 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ (เกือบ 12,420 ล้านบาท) ที่เมตาถูกสั่งให้ชดใช้ในคดีเดียวกันเมื่อเดือนมี.ค.ที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้เมตาระบุว่าจะยื่นอุทธรณ์คำตัดสิน
