แคนาดาสุดช้ำ! – เอเอฟพี และ โกลบอลนิวส์ รายงานวันที่ 18 มิ.ย. ถึงความคืบหน้าการลงมติ ที่ประชุมสมัชชาใหญ่แห่งสหประชาชาติ ในนครนิวยอร์ก สหรัฐอเมริกา เพื่อเลือก 5 ประเทศเข้าเป็นสมาชิกไม่ถาวร ของ คณะมนตรีความมั่นคงแห่งสหประชาชาติ (ยูเอ็นเอสซี) ประจำปี 2564-2565 เมื่อวันพุธที่ 17 มิ.ย. ว่า
อินเดีย และเม็กซิโกผ่านมติเสียงข้างมากโดยไม่มีคู่แข่งได้นั่งเก้าอี้สมาชิกยูเอ็นเอสซี ที่คะแนน 184 เสียง และ 187 เสียงจากทั้งหมด 192 เสียง
ขณะที่แคนาดาซึ่งลุ้นเข้าร่วมสมาชิกมาตั้งแต่ปี 2553 ต้องผิดหวังอีกครั้ง หลังได้คะแนนเพียง 108 เสียง ต่ำสุดในกลุ่มชาติยุโรปที่เข้าชิง ส่งผลให้นอร์เวย์และไอร์แลนด์ซึ่งได้คะแนน 130 เสียง และ 128 เสียง ฉลุยเข้าสู่สมาชิกยูเอ็นเอสซี
สำหรับเคนยาและจิบูตี สองประเทศที่เข้าชิงจากทวีปแอฟริกาได้คะแนนไม่ถึง 2 ใน 3 คือ 113 เสียงและ 78 เสียง จากทั้งหมด 192 เสียง ทำให้ที่ประชุมต้องลงมติรอบสองในวันพฤหัสบดีตามเวลาท้องถิ่น
