ก่อนหน้านี้เคยมีภาพถ่ายของนายคิมใช้สิ่งที่ดูเหมือนจะเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ของแอปเปิล รวมถึงไอแพดและแมคบุ๊ก ขณะที่ข้อมูลจากเดอะเวิลด์แฟกต์บุ๊กหรือซีไอเอเวิลด์แฟกต์บุ๊ก ในสังกัดของสำนักข่าวกรองกลางสหรัฐอเมริกา (ซีไอเอ) ระบุว่าในเกาหลีเหนือมีประชากรเพียงร้อยละ 19 เท่านั้นที่สามารถเข้าถึงโทรศัพท์มือถือได้
