จากนั้นกองทัพอิสราเอลเดินหน้าตอบโต้อย่างหนัก ส่งผลให้ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตในฉนวนกาซ่าเพิ่มเป็นอย่างน้อย 4,137 ราย ส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวปาเลสไตน์ และทำให้ตัวเลขผู้เสียชีวิตรวมทั้งหมดจากเหตุนองเลือดครั้งนี้เพิ่มเป็นมากกว่า 5,537 ราย
ทั้งนี้มีรายงานด้วยว่าหลังจากข้ามด่านชายแดนราฟาห์แล้ว เจ้าหน้าที่องค์การสหประชาชาติ (ยูเอ็น) และเจ้าหน้าที่หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องขนย้ายสิ่งของจากรถบรรทุกขนาดใหญ่ใส่รถบรรทุกขนาดเล็กเพื่อเร่งกระจายความช่วยเหลือไปยังประชาชนจำนวนมากที่ยังติดอยู่ในพื้นที่พิพาท
