ขณะที่จีนใช้แรงกดดันทางการเมืองและทางทหารที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นโดยอ้างกรรมสิทธิ์ว่าไต้หวันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจีน และว่าจีนไม่ตัดความเป็นไปได้ที่จะใช้กำลังเพื่อยึดครองไต้หวัน

ด้านเจ้าหน้าที่ระดับสูงของรัฐบาลสหรัฐอเมริกา กล่าวเมื่อวันพุธที่ 9 ต.ค. ว่าจีนอาจใช้การเฉลิมฉลองวันชาติของไต้หวันเป็น “ข้ออ้าง” ในการซ้อมรบ
ขณะเดียวกันไต้หวันเฝ้าระวังการฝึกซ้อมทางทหารของจีนในพื้นที่ใกล้เกาะไต้หวัน หลังพบว่ามีการประจำการกองกำลังทางทะเลบางส่วน ซึ่งเจ้าหน้าที่ความมั่นคงระดับสูงเปิดเผยว่าจีนยังส่งกำลังทหารไปประจำการเกือบทุกวันรอบๆ เกาะไต้หวัน และจัดการซ้อมรบขนาดใหญ่ 3 ครั้งในช่วง 2 ปีที่ผ่านมา
