พระสันตปาปาฟรานซิสทรงมีพระอาการแย่ลงหลังเสด็จเข้ารับการรักษาที่โรงพยาบาลในกรุงโรมเมื่อวันที่ 14 ก.พ.ที่ผ่านมา เนื่องจากหายพระทัยลำบาก
และพระองค์ทรงมีประวัติติดเชื้อในพระปับผาสะ (ปอด) ง่ายเพราะทรงเคยประชวรด้วยโรคเยื่อหุ้มปอดอักเสบจนต้องผ่าตัดปอดออกข้างหนึ่งออกเมื่อครั้งยังทรงพระเยาว์ สำนักวาติกันระบุอีกว่าในการรักษาครั้งนี้พระสันตปาปาฟรานซิสทรงเข้ารับการถ่ายพระโลหิตเพราะจำนวนเกล็ดเลือดต่ำด้วย
