นายโจเอล โมคีร์ นักประวัติศาสตร์เศรษฐกิจชาวอเมริกันเชื้อสายดัตช์ นายฟิลิปป์ อากียง นักเศรษฐศาสตร์ชาวฝรั่งเศส และนายปีเตอร์ โฮวิตต์ นักเศรษฐศาสตร์ชาวแคนาดา ต่อการอธิบายการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจที่ขับเคลื่อนด้วยนวัตกรรมและการเป็นแรงผลักดันให้เกิดความก้าวหน้าต่อไปได้อย่างไร

ผู้ได้รับรางวัลทำให้เห็นว่าการเติบโตอย่างยั่งยืนนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ควรมองข้าม ภาวะเศรษฐกิจชะงักงันไม่ใช่การเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจ แต่เป็นบรรทัดฐานที่เกิดขึ้นมาเกือบตลอดในประวัติศาสตร์มนุษยชาติ รวมทั้งแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของการตระหนักและรับมือกับภัยคุกคามต่อการเติบโตอย่างต่อเนื่อง
ทั้งนี้ ผู้ชนะจะได้รับเงินรางวัลร่วมกัน 11 ล้านโครเนอร์สวีเดน หรือกว่า 37.8 ล้านบาท โดยรางวัลครึ่งหนึ่งเป็นของนายโมคีร์และอีกครึ่งเป็นของนายอากียงกับนายโฮวิตต์
