เร่งสอบเหตุรถไฟความเร็วสูง – รอยเตอร์ รายงานวันที่ 28 ต.ค. ว่า หน่วยกู้ภัยของสเปนเร่งระดมกำลังค้นหาผู้ประสบภัยท่ามกลางซากปรักหักพังในจุดเกิดเหตุ รถไฟความเร็วสูง 2 ขบวนชนกันอย่างจัง ส่งผลให้ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตเพิ่มเป็นอย่างน้อย 64 ราย และถือเป็นอุบัติเหตุร้ายแรงทางรถไฟครั้งที่สองของประเทศในปีนี้
แหล่งข่าวระบุว่า รถไฟขบวนหนึ่งดำเนินการโดยการรถไฟแห่งชาติของประเทศสเปน (Renfe – เรนเฟ) แล่นด้วยความเร็วสูงและพุ่งชนรถไฟอีกขบวนที่จอดนิ่งอยู่ ส่งผลให้ตู้โดยสารหลายตู้ของรถไฟทั้งสองขบวนตกราง

เรนเฟระบุในแถลงการณ์ว่า หลังได้รับอนุญาตให้เดินทางต่อรถไฟของเรนเฟพุ่งชนเข้ากับรถไฟของบริษัท อิริโย ซึ่งจอดอยู่กับที่ด้วยเหตุผลที่ยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัด “รถไฟของเรนเฟเดินทางต่อไปตามคำสั่งที่ได้รับกระทั่งเกิดเหตุชน ส่วนลำดับเหตุการณ์ที่แน่ชัด สภาพการเดินรถ และสถานการณ์ขณะเกิดการปะทะนั้นจำเป็นต้องรอผลจากการสอบสวน”

รายงานระบุอีกว่าผู้โดยสารที่ถูกอพยพต่างพากันเดินไปตามถนนใกล้จุดเกิดเหตุ บางคนมีคราบเลือดเปรอะเปื้อนหรือมีผ้าพันแผลตามร่างกาย บางคนลากกระเป๋าเดินทาง
