ดินไหว 5.3 เขย่าโครเอเชีย – เอเอฟพี และ รอยเตอร์รายงานวันที่ 22 มี.ค. ว่า เมื่อเวลาราว 06.00 น. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่นของ โครเอเชีย ศูนย์แผ่นดินไหวยุโรป-เมดิเตอร์เรเนียน ซีเอสอีเอ็ม ระบุพบแผ่นดินไหวขนาด 5.3 แม็กนิจูด มีจุดศูนย์กลางราว 7 กิโลเมตร ทางตอนเหนือของ กรุงซาเกร็บ และราว 1 ชั่วโมงต่อมา เกิดอาฟเตอร์ช็อกขนาด 5.0 แม็กนิจูด
แรงสั่นสะเทือนส่งผลให้อาคารในย่านเมืองเก่าใจกลางกรุงซาเกร็บ พังถล่มได้รับความเสียหาย และหลายพื้นที่ไม่มีไฟฟ้าใช้งาน เบื้องต้นยังไม่มีรายงานพบผู้เสียชีวิต แต่มีเด็กหญิงได้รับบาดเจ็บสาหัส 1 คน
ถือเป็นภัยพิบัติซ้ำเติมวิกฤตในช่วงที่โรคโควิด-19 แพร่ระบาด โดยแผ่นไหวครั้งนี้รุนแรงที่สุดที่เคยเกิดขึ้นในกรุงซาเกร็บในรอบเกือบ 140 ปี ขณะที่ยอดผู้ป่วยสะสมของโครเอเชียมีอย่างน้อย 206 คน ในจำนวนนี้เสียชีวิตแล้ว 1 คน และรักษาหายเพียง 5 คน
