หลังเกิดแผ่นดินไหวขนาด 7.6 แม็กนิจูด มีจุดศูนย์กลางราว 21 กิโลเมตรจากเขตฮินาตวน บนเกาะมินดาเนา ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศ และลึกลงไป 32 กิโลเมตร เมื่อเวลาราว 22.37 น. ของวันเสาร์ที่ 2 ธ.ค.ที่ผ่านมา ส่งผลให้ทางการประกาศเตือนภัยสึนามิ แต่ต่อมาลดระดับการเตือนภัยลง
ขณะเดียวกันศูนย์เตือนภัยสึนามิแปซิฟิกในรัฐฮาวาย สหรัฐอเมริกา และญี่ปุ่นก็ออกประกาศเตือนภัยคลื่นยักษ์เช่นกันแต่ยกเลิกในภายหลัง ส่วนผลกระทบจากแผ่นดินไหวทำให้บ้านเรือนพังเสียหายเป็นบริเวณกว้าง และมีผู้บาดเจ็บจำนวนมาก
