ปาปัวนิวกินีระทึก – วันที่ 24 มี.ค. เอเอฟพี รายงานว่า สำนักสำรวจธรณีวิทยาสหรัฐอเมริกา (ยูเอสจีเอส) ระบุว่าเมื่อเวลา 06.22 น. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่นของ ปาปัวนิวกินี ประเทศในแถบโอเชียเนีย เกิด แผ่นดินไหว รุนแรงขนาด 6.9 แม็กนิจูด มีจุดศูนย์กลางทางตอนเหนือของประเทศ ห่างจากเมืองเววักในจังหวัดเซปิกตะวันออกราว 88 กิโลเมตร และอยู่ลึกลงไป 35 กิโลเมตร

เบื้องต้นศูนย์เตือนภัยสึนามิแปซิฟิกแถลงว่าไม่มีภัยคุกคามของสึนามิจากเหตุแผ่นดินไหวดังกล่าว นอกจากนี้ยังไม่มีรายงานพบผู้เสียชีวิตหรือได้รับบาดเจ็บ
ทั้งนี้ แผ่นดินไหวถือเป็นเรื่องปกติในปาปัวนิวกินีเนื่องจากมีภูมิประเทศตั้งอยู่บนวงแหวนแห่งไฟ โดยก่อนหน้านี้เมื่อเดือนเม.ย.2566 เกิดแผ่นดินไหวขนาด 7.0 แม็กนิจูดในปาปัวนิวกินี ส่งผลให้มีผู้เสียชีวิต 7 ราย และบ้านเรือนเสียหายเป็นบริเวณกว้าง

The “notable quake” hit some 88 kilometres southwest of Wewak, the USGS said, a town of 25,000 people that serves as the capital of Papua New Guinea’s East Sepik province.
