พบฟอสซิลจระเข้ – เอเอฟพี รายงานการค้นพบที่น่าตื่นเต้นใน ประเทศเปรู เมื่อนักนักบรรพชีวินวิทยาเปิดเผยว่าพบ “ฟอสซิลจระเข้น้ำเค็ม” อายุประมาณ 10-12 ล้านปีก่อนในทะเลทรายของเปรู
เมื่อปลายปี 2566 คณะนักบรรพชีวินวิทยาพบฟอสซิลของ ตะโขง ในทะเลทรายโอกูคาเจ ห่างจากกรุงลิมา เมืองหลวงของเปรูไปทางใต้ราว 350 กิโลเมตร และที่น่าทึ่งคือฟอสซิลอยู่ในสภาพสมบูรณ์และมีความยาวประมาณ 3 เมตร

นายมาริโอ กามาร์รา นักบรรพชีวินวิทยาสัตว์ประเภทมีกระดูกสันหลัง กล่าวว่านี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่พบสัตว์สปีชีส์นี้ในช่วงอายุวัยรุ่นเพราะตายในขณะที่ยังโตไม่เต็มที่
จากการศึกษากะโหลกศีรษะและขากรรไกรของตัวอย่างฟอสซิลทำให้เห็นว่ามีความแตกต่างจากจระเข้และจระเข้ตีนเป็ดหรือแอลลิเกเตอร์ เนื่องจากฟอสซิลมีส่วนจมูก-ปากแหลมเรียวยาวและกินปลาเป็นอาหาร สำหรับสายพันธุ์ที่ใกล้เคียงกันที่สุดซึ่งยังมีชีวิตอยู่ในปัจจุบัน คือ “ตะโขงอินเดีย”
การค้นพบครั้งนี้เป็นความร่วมมือระหว่างสถาบันธรณีวิทยา เหมืองแร่ และโลหการแห่งเปรูและโรงเรียนลา อูนิยง ทั้งนี้ ทะเลทรายโอกูคาเจในเปรูมีฟอสซิลมากมาย เช่น วาฬแคระสี่ขา โลมา ฉลาม และสัตว์สายพันธุ์อื่นๆ ที่เคยมีชีวิตในยุคไมโอซีน เมื่อ 5-23 ล้านปีก่อน
