ทิเบตผวาแผ่นดินไหว – เอเอฟพี รายงานวันที่ 7 ม.ค. ว่า เมื่อเวลา 09.05 น. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่นของจีน เกิดแผ่นดินไหวรุนแรงขนาด 6.8 แม็กนิจูด
ขณะที่สำนักสำรวจธรณีวิทยาสหรัฐอเมริกา (ยูเอสจีเอส) ระบุว่าแผ่นดินไหวมีขนาด 7.1 แม็กนิจูด มีจุดศูนย์กลางใน เขตปกครองตนเองทิเบต ทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศจีน และใกล้กรุงกาฐมาณฑุ ประเทศเนปาล

เบื้องต้นพบผู้เสียชีวิตอย่างน้อย 32 ราย และอีก 38 รายได้รับบาดเจ็บ ท่ามกลางความวิตกกังวลว่าตัวเลขของเหยื่ออาจเพิ่มขึ้น นอกจากนี้ยังเกิดอาฟเตอร์ช็อกตามมาหลายระลอกตั้งแต่เวลาราว 10.00 น. โดยอาฟเตอร์ช็อกขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดวัดได้คือ 4.4 แม็กนิจูด
ด้านสำนักข่าวซินหัวรายงานว่าบ้านเรือนหลายหลังในเขตติงกริพังถล่มลงมา และเจ้าหน้าที่ท้องถิ่นกำลังติดต่อไปยังสำนักงานเขตต่างๆ เพื่อประเมินผลกระทบจากแผ่นดินไหว
ขณะที่ศูนย์เครือข่ายแผ่นดินไหวแห่งจีน (ซีอีเอ็นซี) แถลงว่าแม้แผ่นดินไหวจะเป็นเรื่องปกติในภูมิภาคดังกล่าว แต่แผ่นดินไหวครั้งล่าสุดถือว่ารุนแรงที่สุดในรัศมี 200 กิโลเมตรและในรอบ 5 ปีที่ผ่านมา

The quake struck Dingri county with a magnitude of 6.8 near the border with Nepal at 9:05 am, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The US Geological Survey reported the quake as magnitude 7.1. The high-altitude county in the Tibet region is home to around 62,000 people.
