สื่อท้องถิ่นในจีนหลายสำนักระบุว่า น.ส.อู๋เปิดเผยว่าระหว่างกำลังดูโทรทัศน์เพลินๆ อยู่ในห้องนั่งเล่น ตนอยากกินขนมเลยเอื้อมมือคว้าถุงขนมที่พี่ชายเป็นคนซื้อมาฝาก แต่หยิบผิดเป็นถุงประทัดสำหรับใช้ในโอกาสฉลองวันมงคลต่างๆ รวมทั้งวันตรุษจีนที่เพิ่งผ่านมา
น.ส.อู๋คิดว่าประทัดเป็นขนมรสนมเนื้อหนึบเหมือนที่เคยกินตอนเด็กๆ แต่เมื่อกัดเข้าไปคำแรกประทัดก็ระเบิดภายในปาก แม้จะไม่รู้สึกเจ็บในทันที แต่รับรู้ได้ถึงรสชาติดินปืนและต่อมาปากเริ่มมีอาการชา ถึงอย่างนั้นน.ส.อู๋ก็ยังโชคดีเพราะไม่ได้บาดเจ็บรุนแรง
รายงานระบุด้วยว่าห่อประทัดทำให้น.ส.อู๋เข้าใจผิดคิดว่าเป็นขนมซึ่งชาวเน็ตหลายคนเห็นตรงกันว่าถ้าเป็นตนก็คงเข้าใจผิดเช่นกัน เพราะคล้ายขนมที่หลายคนคุ้นเคยและคงจะรับประทานเข้าไปเหมือนกัน
