หลังเกิดเหตุไฟไหม้รุนแรงเมื่อวันที่ 3 มิ.ย.ที่ผ่านมา ส่งผลให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตอย่างน้อย 12 ราย และได้รับบาดเจ็บอีก 6 ราย

ก่อนหน้านี้เจ้าหน้าที่ระบุว่ามีผู้เสียชีวิตในเบื้องต้น 5 ราย แต่ต่อมาทีมผู้เชี่ยวชาญนิติวิทยาศาสตร์นำกำลังเข้าตรวจสอบซากปรักหักพังและพบร่างผู้เสียชีวิตในสภาพไหม้เกรียมอีก 7 ราย ในจำนวนนี้เหยื่อที่อายุน้อยที่สุดเป็นวัยรุ่นชายอายุ 17 ปี
ขณะที่โฆษกตำรวจศรีลังกาเปิดเผยว่าผู้อยู่อาศัยและเจ้าหน้าที่ 51 คนได้รับการช่วยเหลือก่อนย้ายไปยังสถานที่ทางการใกล้เคียง ส่วนสาเหตุของไฟไหม้ยังอยู่ระหว่างการสอบสวน
