ตำรวจระดับสูงนายหนึ่งเปิดเผยว่า เพลิงไหม้เริ่มขึ้นเมื่อเวลาราว 02:50 น. บริเวณชั้น 2 ของโรงแรม และหน่วยดับเพลิงสามารถควบคุมไฟไหม้ได้ภายในเวลา 1 ชั่วโมง ขณะที่สาเหตุคาดว่าอาจเกิดจากไฟฟ้าลัดวงจร แต่ยังต้องสืบสวนอย่างละเอียดก่อน
ด้านกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของบังกลาเทศระบุว่า ชาวบังกลาเทศ 4 ใน 5 รายที่เสียชีวิตเป็นสมาชิกครอบครัวเดียวกัน และยังมีชาวบังกลาเทศอีก 6 รายได้รับบาดเจ็บ
