แอฟริกาใต้ช็อก – บีบีซี รายงานวันที่ 6 ก.ค. ว่า เกิดเหตุต้องสงสัยว่าเป็น ก๊าซพิษรั่วไหล ในพื้นที่ตั้งถิ่นฐานใกล้เหมืองทองคำผิดกฎหมายใน เมืองบอกส์เบิร์ก ทางตะวันออกของนครโจฮันเนสเบิร์ก จังหวัดเคาเต็ง ทางตอนเหนือของ แอฟริกาใต้ เมื่อวันพุธที่ 5 ก.ค.
เบื้องต้นพบผู้เสียชีวิตแล้วอย่างน้อย 16 ราย ในจำนวนนี้มีผู้หญิงและเด็กรวมอยู่ด้วย ด้านทางการสันนิษฐานว่าเป็น “ก๊าซไนเตรตออกไซด์” หรือที่ชาวพื้นเมืองเรียกว่า “ซามาซามาส” ซึ่งนิยมใช้ในการสกัดทองออกจากดินที่ลักลอบขุดในเหมืองร้าง

ท่ามกลางความวิตกกังวลว่าจะมีเหยื่อเพิ่มขึ้น เนื่องจากผู้เสียชีวิตถูกพบในรัศมี 100 เมตรจากถังก๊าซที่ตรวจเจอว่ามีการรั่วไหล และเจ้าหน้าที่กำลังเร่งค้นหาพื้นที่โดยรอบ
